Academic Progress Tracking 2012/13

29 October 2012 by Jim

As part of my pledge to become a better student I wanted to keep a close eye on my progress, and this is what I will do on this post. I’ll do a weekly and monthly review of how far I’ve come here.

Week October 22 – 28 (31h20)

This week the courses have started and I’ve been playing around with organisation strategies. I have not yet worked through my course material because I’ve found out that I am supposed to send in a big assignment requiring me to read 2000 pages by November 11 so I try to get through that material and produce something meaningful. This allows me to get up to speed on the reading, since these first three books are the longest texts I’ll have to work with this year, and I will also be able to get into the subject matter quite rapidly.

  • 2.21 books
    903 pages
    31 hours 20 minutes read
  • no homework done yet
  • no coursework done yet

Next week I will have to get through Ellison’s book and a good part of Céline’s as well and work through the course material for this course and start the coursework for two others.

Week October 29 – November 4 (38h27, + 7h07)

  • 2.78 books (+0.57)
    763 + 482 = 1245 pages (+342)
    28h22 + 10h05 = 38h27 (+7h07)
  • no homework done yet
  • 2% of the October coursework done (+2%)

Week November 4 – November 11 (46h22, + 7h55)

  • 3 books (+0.22)
    1360 pages (+115)
    42h22 (+3h55)
  • 1 of 32 homework assignments done (+1)
    2.5 pages written
    3h (+3h)
  • 5% of the October coursework done (+3%)
    10 pages read / digested / summed up (+10)
    1 h (+1h)

I’m way too lame right now, I know that. Speeding up as we speak.

Week November 12 – November 18 (62h24, +16h02)

  • 3.16 books (+0.16)
    1440 pages (+80)
    46h22 (+4h)
  • 1.5 of 32 homework assignments done (+0.5)
    2.5 pages written
    3h20 (+0h20)
  • 33% of the October coursework done (+27%)
    127 pages read / digested / summed up (+117)
    13h (+11h42)

Week November 19 – November 25 (66h, +3h)

  • 3.16 books read
  • 2 of 32 homework assignments done (+0.5)
  • 40% of the October coursework done (+7%)
    14h (+2h)

Week November 26 – December 2 (70h, +4h)

  • 3.16 books read
  • 2 of 32 homework assignments done
  • 50% of the October coursework done (+10%)
    18h (+4h)

#Update December 3: As can easily be seen, I’m behind already. Yes, I’ve been a lazy bastard, but the vacation is over now. Now it’s work, work, work. I’m trying to go a lot faster now.

Week December 3 – December 10 (75h, +5h)

  • 3.25 books read (+9%)
  • 2 of 32 homework assignments done
  • 66% of the October coursework done (+16%)
    23h (+5h)

#Update December 10: I have had lots of paid work this week and I’ve been quite fast the last five days even though I’ve been quite lazy today. I invested about 20 hours of my week in paid work. This always comes up when I least need it…

Week December 10 – December 16 (91h, +16h)

  • 3.75 books read (+50%, +10h)
  • 2 of 32 homework assignments done
  • 44% of the Oct/Nov coursework done [new courses have arrived…]
    29h (+6h)

Week December 17 – December 23 (105h, +14h)

  • 4.5 books read (+75%, +7h)
  • 2 of 32 homework assignments done
  • Oct 66%, Nov 8%, Dec 0%
    35h (+7h)

#Update December 23: I have finally realised, as I did in the past two years as well, that trying to summarise every course sheet of every course I study is not practical, especially when faced with the kind of work quantity that I am currently dealing with, so I switched, again as in the previous years, to a vastly quicker reading-only mode in the hopes of catching up. It will work. I have to stop trying to do things perfectly and first get them done before I try to perfect them. Once more I’ve been mislead because I didn’t pay attention to my own experience and thought I could be superhuman though every piece of evidence of the last two years indicates the contrary. This time I’ll learn from my mistake!
